Senior Technical Animator

Responsibilities: 

Reporting to the Lead Technical Animator, the Senior Technical Animator will be responsible for working across disciplines to research, develop, and implement features related to Character Art, Cinematics, Gameplay and Locomotion. In this role, you will help solve complex animation challenges and improve the efficiency, quality and ease of various content creation pipelines. 

The ideal candidate, you have worked on a range of game development projects and have experience designing character animation systems in Unreal Engine 4. Ultimately, you are a proactive team with a passion for quality who will be instrumental in achieving our ambitious goals for Characters, Gameplay and Animation, on a high profile title.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate across disciplines to research, develop, and implement features related to Character Art, Cinematics, Gameplay and Locomotion

  • Create tools and write scripts to improve the efficiency, quality and ease of various content creation pipelines

  • Enhance the UE4 systems in support the Art and Design goals 

  • Help the animation team define, create, and maintain animation pipelines and processes

  • Assist with complex dynamics such as the in-game physics of characters/cloth/hair

  • Work cross-functionally to ensure character models meet technical and animation requirements 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years technical animation or equivalent experience, ideally having shipped one  or more AAA titles

  • Experience designing character animation systems in Unreal Engine 4

  • Previously developed large and complex game systems in collaboration with Art and Design

  • Knowledge in Maya or other 3D programs such as MotionBuilder and Houdini

  • Experience in C++ programming 

  • Solid understanding of debugging practices, performance analysis, and production pitfalls (Extra credit if you’ve been there, done that and have the well worn T-shirt)

  • Strong familiarity with runtime animations systems, including: blending, physics-based/procedural animation, inverse kinematics, and animation state machines

  • Proficiency in Python, PyQt/PySide and/or equivalent scripting languages (a plus)

Solid understanding of following: Auto rig systems, facial rigs, simulation setup, animation retargeting, motion capture pipeline, dialog system, hair, cloth dynamic and tool support
